Golfer's swing sparks 25-acre California blaze
Follow Jay Busbee on Twitter at @jaybusbee.
You can use a golf club for all kinds of non-golfy purposes -- walking stick, fishing rod, club, to name three. And now we can add to that list -- firestarter.
Over the weekend, a golfer's routine swing in the rough at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine, Calif., struck a rock. Not so different from the way you play, right? Only this time, the impact caused a spark, and the spark set off a blaze that eventually covered 25 acres, according to the Steven Buck, General Manager of Shady Canyon Golf Course, and required the efforts of 150 Orange County firefighters, writes the Associated Press.
Wow. And I felt bad the time I shanked a ball through the window of a house too close to the fairway. That was nothing compared to this!
The golfer's name is being withheld, which is probably for the best, and no charges are going to be filed. Fortunately, it all could have been much worse. As it was, the blaze required both helicopters and on-the-ground crews.
The conditions were ripe for a blaze, with dry brush from a recent heat wave just waiting for the right spark. Like, say, one caused by metal on rock.
And now, your turn. This is going to inspire a raft of bad Sportscenter-esque "When we say he set the course on fire, he really set the course on fire!" jokes. So let's get ahead of the curve. Best bad golf-and-fire-related pun in the comments wins a round of applause. Go!

Aero Cup 2010 Tiara Melaka
We fell short again to win the Aero Cup this year as only 8 members turned up instead of the required 20. It was like watching a world cup match of 11 against 5 but nonetheless kudos to Air Asia for organising such a great tournament. However, our president Ammirul Haidir fought hard for us and took home the best gross trophy for shooting 80, 80 on both days...wow!!!! A special mention as well, Aidil Putra was closest to the dedicated bulls eye par 3 holes on both consecutive days... now that is just fantastic iron play bro...congrats! In the end the main objective of the Aero Cup tournament was achieved as we continue to foster better relationship with our tarmac partners. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Abu Bakar Shafie, Johanuddin, Aminullah, Rizam, Aidil Putra and Aifiq for supporting us this Aero Cup and not forgetting Ariffin Arshad for playing the first day as our guest. The MAPA Golf team will be taking a break for a while for the coming Ramadhan and we would like to wish everyone a good Masters tournament next week and a happy 'Hari Raya'...from all of us 'Maaf Zahir Batin'Wednesday, July 7, 2010

MAPA vs MAS Cabin Crew 30th June 2010 Sri Selangor GC
The traditional Ryder Cup tournament between MAPA and Cabin Crew this year was held at the tough and unforgiving Sri Selangor Golf Course. It was a great event to foster good ties between both parties. The relationship between us, have always been cordial and it resumed so in the serene setting of Sri Selangor's morning glow. Well, only to find out later that precision and accuracy will seperate between the good and really good golfers. The not so good golfers didn't have a chance and were probably blown away to the role of hackers...adus!!! fact!!! Nonetheless winning was not the main objective of this tournament but enjoying or suffering at golf was more important. Sharing laughter, looking for lost balls were the agenda for the day but in the end only one side will prevail. Well this time it was a case of a 'hindustan' story as the MAPA boys gracefully lost the Ryder Cup but vowed to fightback next year with the theory of 'Biar Hero Kalah Dulu...yeah rite!!!' Hats off and kudos to all cabin crew golfers for winning the Ryder Cup as a team, and we shall be back next year to reclaim our trophy...Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Staffield 31st May 2010
In a bid to attract back the southern golfers, the MAPA golf team decided to bait them at their favourite golf course, the Staffield Country Resort. Indeed the strategy proved to be fruitful with a participation of 22 golfers, many of them were 'southerners' of course...hehe. In addition we had a few players from MAS cabin crew lead by Man 'Bear' to promote the upcoming Ryder Cup tournament between the pilots and cabin crew with the pilots being the cup holders, methinks? We also had Zulhemi from Etihad to join in our event and indeed he showed that desert play is still an vital part of the golf game as bunkers were a plenty in Staffield's links layout. After the usual morning breakfast and chit chat the golfers adjourned to the main event, trying to conquer Staffield's famous and challenging 'southern course' especially the signature par 3 8th... ah piece of cake today haha...anyway, after a gruelling second nine under the blazing sun, the best of the best posted some good scores with Aziz Rahmat blasting the field away with a gross score of 78. The nett champion went to Aminullah aka Brandon, I dub the 'the tiger replacement' with a nett score of 71. Oh man these guys are good!!! Congrats to all the other winners and a special thank you to all new players that braved and joined in on our MAPA golf get together. Are we not friendly? So to the rest, do join us next time and be part of the MAPA team on the 30th of June to retain the prestigious Ryder Cup...until next time...enjoy the pics...Friday, April 30, 2010
Templer Park 29th April 2010
The turn out for the second circuit of 2010 was better than expected as we had 22 golfers taking part this time. I guess the allure of playing in Templer was just too hard to resist. Among our guests were Lokman from KSM, Jazrin from AirAsia, Azizul Hakim (soon to be cadet pilot), Johan the champ, Saiful & Helen from cabin crew and 3 times MAS Masters champion Aziz Rahmat also graced the event. What more can I say, even Halim our pro golfer from 737 made a rare appearance. Surely it was going to be an event like no other.Everyone came early to have breakfast and 'borak-borak' with each other discussing about why some people were late (ehem ehem) just kidding lor!!! Shortly after that, we adjourned to the tee box to start the whackings but wait...not before we have a snapshot against the most famous backdrop in golf. Ye ke?
Aha the famous Templer backdrop...
Saiful taking a stroll across the stream on the par 3, 16th ala Augusta!
Nice & easy swing = 100% fairway hits!!!
